Brief History
Like much of Utah, Midway was first inhabited by Native Americans, specifically the Ute tribe. By the 1820s, fur trappers had found their way into the Heber Valley led by Etienne Provost. The first European settlers made the Heber Valley their home in 1859.
Midway was an area dedicated to agriculture and ranching until the Heber Valley Railroad boosted growth and industry in the area in upon its arrival in 1899. Growth in the area was steady from 1940 to 1990, culminating in a total city population of approximately 1,500 people.
In 1995, the growth trend began to explode after Salt Lake City was announced as the host city for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Today, the population of the city is just over 6,500. Midway proudly maintains its small-town charm while boasting a population and income base big enough to support local shopping and retail.
